ToggleMatcha: The growing trend with no end!
Matcha is really common among tea lovers and nutritonally-conscious folks: an attractive addition to daily routines – with a ritual character.
As the trend continues to rise, the growing demand for matcha as a fine tea, dietary supplement as well as an ingredient in food and cosmetics shows no signs of slowing down.
So congrats on having this green powder in your assortment!
Riding the Wave:
Matcha is more than just a beverage; it’s a sought-after supplement with enjoyers and nutritonally-conscious consumers on the rise.
And high quality also comes with a correspondingly high price – also for you when purchasing. Well, at least if buying these ready-to-sell cans from your supplier.
- identical looking
- mostly silver
- 30 grams
- standard cans
- sealed tear-off-lid
But: There is a much more lucrative way:
Rely on Matcha as raw material and pack it yourself!
Super simple and a real self-starter!
The hack: Matcha from the sack!
Ask your supplier for Matcha as bagged kilo goods. Many already offer this in their catalog or B2B online shops. Purchase the needed quantity of the quality you go for.
Matcha is a delicate product. It’s susceptible to air, moisture, and light and can lose flavor and quality if not stored properly.
Here are my guidelines for storing Matcha properly:
- in a cool and dry place
- with stable temperatures between 0° and 20°C (I recommend about 8°C)
- in a dark place with no direct sunlight or heat sources
- in airtight opaque containers such as cans or resealable pouches
- use a desiccant packet to absorb any excess moisture
- minimize contact with oxygen and fill the container as much as possible
- use vacuum-sealed bags for long-term storage
- don’t freeze because this affects matcha’s texture and flavor
Coming back to our story:
Open the Matcha bag from your supplier and
- refill the entire content immediately in can blanks
- seal the cans
- label the cans
- store them properly as described before
Go for blank cans!
Look for Matcha can blanks in the product range of manufacturers and suppliers. Some may not display them in their catalogs – for good reason. Ask them for an offer.
Matcha can blanks come in three parts
- the cylindrical body with a tear-off lid
- the screw cap
- the bottom
Matcha tin components
Alibaba is a great place to start looking for blank matcha cans.
Silver cans are most commonly sold. But they are also available in white and black which I find more valuable and prefer. Special colors only become affordable when the purchased quantity is high.
The big deal: a simple machine to seal!
Sealing machines come in various models, from manual to fully automatic, catering to your production scale and budget.
The sealing machine’s specified usable diameter must match that of the Matcha can.
I had good experiences with this very simple and low-priced half-automatic model available from 350€.
Sealing machine for tins
Again, Alibaba is a good to find similar machines and explanatory videos.
How to proceed?
Turn the tin upside down, fill the open base, put the base plate on top, and let the sealing machine do its job – it’s that easy to refill and seal Matcha on your own!
An easy work that takes seconds.
Depending on your Country and it’s specific security measures your occupational safety specialist may require intervention protection, which you can easily solve with an acrylic glass screen.
Labels on – get ready to sell your own branded Matchas!
Design your customized labels for the cans. All you have to do is record the dimensions of the can:
- height and development of the cylinder
- diameter of the lid for the round lid label
With these specifications, you can create label templates relatively easily and have them produced at online printing companies for small money.
Remember to include all seals of approval and mandatory information on the labels:
- manufacturer information
- weight information
- ingredients and possible flavors
- organic seals
- recycling logos
- brewing instructions
- batch number and expiry date
Better provide a separate self-printed label for the batch number and expiry date to stick on the can’s bottom.
This information of course changes with each batch but you don’t want to adjust the can labels every time.
Do not forget about the minimum font size on labels. In Germany, for example, this requires a font height of 1.2mm; on small labels such as matcha cans, 0.9mm is required, which is then rather difficult to read.
Once the design of your branded labels is complete, you should start printing a stock quantity to save money.
Start the Matcha-Margin-Miracle!
Well, calculation is simple!
Let’s consider a medium-quality Matcha (all values approximate):
your selling price before taxes: | 20,00€ |
your purchase price for one ready-to-sell 30g can: | -14,00€ |
your gross margin per unit: | =6,00€ |
The calculation for our proposal looks completely different:
your selling price before taxes: | 20,00€ |
your purchase price for 30g (1/33 kilo): | -2,30€ |
your purchase price for can and labels: | -1,50€ |
your gross margin per unit: | =16,20€ |
The effort for labeling and can closures excluded. As experienced, this is really limited and so is the investment in the sealing machine and the designing of the labels.
Doubled happiness: good branding also increases your matcha sales!
Uniqueness Attracts: Self-packaging and labeling allow you to offer Matcha products that stand out, drawing in customers looking for a distinctive experience.
Custom packaging creates a strong emotional connection with your brand, making it more appealing to potential buyers.
A great chance to not only boost your margin but also increase your sales!
